Chena Lakes Rec Area

Chena Lakes Public Recreation Area

I list Chena Lakes when it's hot, to remind you of a gorgeous place to take the family to cool off, and go swimming or boating.

The cost for a vehicle full is $4.00 ($1.00 per person if you bike, bus, or walk)

My favorite part of Chena Lakes is the clean and inexpensive boat rental.

They have canoes, row boats, pedal boats, and kayaks. They provide life vests, paddles or oars.

You need to leave your drivers license (or ID), and have an adult sign a consent form.

Then boat around the lake to picnic sites or camping spots. It's a non-motorized like, so it's a peaceful and calm day spent on the water.

Alaska Summer Research Academy - Registration Open

For students grade 8-12.

The Alaska Summer Research Academy (ASRA) offers a hands-on, in-depth experience in one of 15 different subjects in the sciences and liberal arts. Groups of 8 students work closely with University of Alaska Fairbanks faculty & staff who are experts in their field.

These instructors are gifted educators, eager to share the love of their subject with young students. The focus is on fun and learning without exams or homework. Students live on campus and experience college life. Evenings are filled with a wide variety recreational activities.

In 2007 they are offering the following academic units: BioMedicine, Civil Engineering, Computer Forensics, Earthquakes in Denali National Park, Electrical Engineering, Filmmaking, Forensics, Law, Photography, Programming Robotics, Robotics, Web Media/Podcasting, Wildlife Ecology, and Marine Biology in Kasitsna Bay.

This kicks off the beginning of Nenana's unique game of chance, based on the break up of the Tanana River. Purchase a chance at the jackpot by guessing the time and date of when the ice breaks up enough to move the tripod on the ice.

It's a great family event with entertainment and contests, plus a chance to get out of town.

I noted before that it's a great chance to take a train ride. Check the schedule for the Alaska Railroad; drop off a car in Nenana the night before (there's no roundtrip back from Nenana); hop on the train and have breakfast while looking for moose. The kids love it.

Engineering Open House

Yukon Quest Movies

The Alaska Public Lands Information Center is showing the Quest movie “Six On/Six Off” daily Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

Another Quest movie will be shown Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and introduced by filmmaker Becky Bristow.

Yukon Quest Events

Fairbanks Soil & Water Conservation District is proud to sponsor its 2007 Speech and Poster Contest. This year's theme is "Conservation's Power." Local winners will receive cash prizes and advance to compete at the state competition in March. All students are invited to become involved in this contest. The Nenana Serum Run

The Serum 25 Run is a long distance dog mushing expedition that commemorates the courageous effort and success of the original Serum Runners, who were responsible for bringing the life saving diphtheria serum to Nome in 1925. The late Col. Norman Vaughan Serum 25 was the Run leader, along with dog mushers and supporting snow machiners. The Serum Run travels the same route taken by the original Serum Runners from Nenana to Nome..

My family took the Alaska Railroad to Nenana in 2004(we dropped a car off the night before to get home). The train conductor was carrying the, vial of diphtheria serum to be presented to the expedition team waiting in Nenana. We weren't aware of this when we decided to make the trip. We were the only people departing in Nenana, and when the doors opened we were shocked by the photographers, reporters, snowmachiners, mushers, dogs, and Col. Norman Vaughn himself. There was a very brief ceremonial passing the vial to Col. Vaughn, and off the mushers went. It was fantastic! The amazing Norman Vaughn passed away in 2005 at the age of 100.
