Engineering Open House

Yukon Quest Movies

The Alaska Public Lands Information Center is showing the Quest movie “Six On/Six Off” daily Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

Another Quest movie will be shown Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and introduced by filmmaker Becky Bristow.

Fairbanks Soil & Water Conservation District is proud to sponsor its 2007 Speech and Poster Contest. This year's theme is "Conservation's Power." The Nenana Serum Run

The Serum 25 Run is a long distance dog mushing expedition that commemorates the courageous effort and success of the original Serum Runners, who were responsible for bringing the life saving diphtheria serum to Nome in 1925. The late Col. Norman Vaughan Serum 25 was the Run leader, along with dog mushers and supporting snow machiners. The Serum Run travels the same route taken by the original Serum Runners from Nenana to Nome..

My family took the Alaska Railroad to Nenana in 2004(we dropped a car off the night before to get home). The train conductor was carrying the, vial of diphtheria serum to be presented to the expedition team waiting in Nenana. We weren't aware of this when we decided to make the trip. We were the only people departing in Nenana, and when the doors opened we were shocked by the photographers, reporters, snowmachiners, mushers, dogs, and Col. Norman Vaughn himself. There was a very brief ceremonial passing the vial to Col. Vaughn, and off the mushers went. It was fantastic! The amazing Norman Vaughn passed away in 2005 at the age of 100.

Parents and Twos is a story time for two year olds and a parent or caregiver.

This free program requires advance registration. Sign-up for the 4-week March 2007 session will begin on Tuesday, February 20th.

New Year’s fireworks

Sparktacular Celebration at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Fireworks will begin at 8 p.m. Sunday and will be launched from UAF’s West Ridge.

Thompson Drive, from Geist Road to the roundabout, will be closed at 7 p.m. The roundabout will remain open.
The areas of Tanana Loop and Yukon Drive nearest the fireworks staging area at the overlook pullout on West Ridge will be closed to the public at 7 p.m. Motorists will be able to access the UAF campus from North Tanana Drive, Alumni Drive and Sheep Creek Road.

The University of Alaska Museum of the North will be serving free hot cocoa and cookies.

The museum galleries will be open to the public at no charge from 7-9 p.m.

Spectators are reminded that Alaska Railroad trains travel through the area between 7:30 and 9 p.m. Alaska Railroad officials request that spectators, both pedestrian and those on snowmachines, remain clear of the railroad tracks for safety reasons.
The Sparktacular event is organized by Mike Thomas, owner of University Chevron, and is sponsored by several Fairbanks community groups and businesses.
It is open to the public.

Super Sitter Class

For students 12-18, covers basic first aid, how to handle emergencies, how to care for infants, child development, positive discipline and fun crafts and activites to do with children.

Students receive a super sitter tote bag, first aid kit, picture book and more upon completion.
