Museum Day 2006 Fairbanks Saturday May 27th

Here's the list of participating museums for the FREE museum day.

FREE admission 11am - 4pm

*The Alaska Public Lands Information Center, at Third Avenue and Cushman Street, has an extensive display of natural and cultural resource exhibits, as well as fish and wildlife information.
* Fairbanks Community Museum, in the old City Hall at Fifth Avenue and Cushman Street, focuses on the history of Fairbanks and includes the official Yukon Quest store.
* The Fairbanks Ice Museum, in the Lacey Street Theater, includes full-sized displays made from crystal-clear ice.
* The Alaska Native Museum, in Pioneer Park, displays a wide range of Native artifacts and architectural examples.
* The Kitty Hensley House reflects life in the early days of Fairbanks. It was relocated to Gold Rush Town in Pioneer Park from its original downtown location.
* The Pioneer Air Museum, in the Pioneer Park Gold Dome, is dedicated to the preservation of aviation history. It's a blend of memorabilia and stories of Alaska's aviation heritage.
* The Pioneer Museum and Big Stampede, at Pioneer Park, includes historic collections and gifts from Alaska Pioneers. The Big Stampede includes paintings and narration describing Alaska's early history.
* The Sternwheeler S.S. Nenana, at Pioneer Park, is a restored steamship built in 1933 for the Alaska Railroad.
* The Tanana Valley Railroad Museum, at Pioneer Park, includes Alaska Railroad artifacts, features, and the home of the oldest operating steam locomotive in Alaska and the Yukon.
* Wickersham House Museum, a relocated downtown home in Pioneer Park, gives a look at early house construction and furnishings.
* Georgeson Botanical Garden, at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is a living museum of perennial plants that survive in the local environment. It's an outgrowth of the Agricultural Experiment Station, which began in 1905.
* Creamer's Field is both a stopover for migratory birds and a look at a vintage Interior dairy, operated today by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
* The University of Alaska Museum of the North will display its newly opened galleries and expanded facility. To receive free admission, participants must mention that they are taking the Museums Day tour.

We did this one year and had a great time! I was amazed that there were so many different museums in Fairbanks.Our favorites were the Gold Rush Museum downtown,
and The Aviators Museum at Pioneer Park. I love the Kitty Hensley House, but my two boys are quick in to look and quick out to play.
